Cephalopod mollusc with elongated, stout and muscular body, small head, with eight arms and 2 longer tentacles equipped with suction disks. The colour varies depending on the expansion of the chromatophores (special cells) in the skin, which can be greyish-transparent or reddish.
It lives from surface waters to depths of 550 m, especially between 20 and 250 m. An active predator that feeds on fish, crustaceans or other cephalopods.
30-40 cm (mantle length), most commonly 15 to 25 cm.
It has a spawning season that lasts all year.
It is captured with different gear: Dragnet and longlines.
It is one of the healthiest foods in the kitchen. Its meat is delicate, tasty and highly appreciated. Like all cephalopods, it is rich in mineral salts.
