It is a fish with a stout and elongated body, covered with folds and spines. It is reddish in colour, with dark brush strokes. Its underbody is a little lighter in colour.
It lives on sand or rock bottoms, covered with algae, between 20 and 100 m, and exceptionally it can reach depths of 200 m. It feeds on crustaceans, molluscs and small fish.
Its length ranges between 25 and 30 cm with a maximum length of 50 cm.
Its spawning season is from May to August. Its fishing season is from April to September.
It is captured with different gear: Dragnet, trammel and longline.
High quality white fish, its meat is especially tasty and delicate. Due to its high protein, mineral and low fat content, its consumption is exceptional for the cardiovascular system and the nervous system.
