Mullus surmuletus

It is a medium-sized fish with an elongated body and small mouth with two barbels, which serves as a sensory organ of taste and touch. Its general colour is reddish with three longitudinal yellow stripes.

It lives isolated or in small groups and in rocky places, in depths of about 400 m. It feeds on small crustaceans and molluscs.

Its length ranges between 10 and 25 cm, but it can reach a maximum length of 40 cm.

Its spawning season is from April to July, and fishing season is in the autumn.

It is captured with different gear: Dragnet and trammel.

Semi-fatty white fish, the meat is firm, delicate and highly appreciated.
