Sardina pilchardus

It is a fish with an elongated body and slightly flat on the sides, with the mouth located in final position. The back is greyish blue and sometimes with greenish tones, the sides and belly are silver.

It lives in the marine environment and sometimes close to the sea bottom, swimming in large schools that move in depths between 10 and 100 m. It feeds mainly on planktonic crustaceans.

It is a fish that normally ranges between 15 and 20 cm in length and a maximum of 28 cm.

Its spawning season is from November to June.

It is captured with different gear: Dragnet and fixed gillnets.

A blue fish, it contains a high protein content and Omega-3 acids and its consumption helps to reduce cholesterol.
