Sphyraena sphyraena

It is a fish with a very elongated, rounded and narrow body, with a lower jaw a little longer than the upper one. Its colour is green brown, greenish grey or yellowish with a score of darker stripes in the upper half of the body.

It lives on sandy and rocky bottoms of the coastal zone. The young ones usually swim in schools, whereas the adults are generally solitary. It feeds on fish, crustaceans and squid.

Its spawning season is from April to September and lives in warm waters.

It is a fish with a length of 30 to 60 cm, although it can reach 1 m.

It is captured with different gear: Fixed gillnets, trammel and longline.

Its meat is very tender, tasty and of good quality.
