Fish with a stout, elongated round body in the middle and very thin near the tail. It has a dark blue colour on the back and almost black on the head; silver in the belly, with twelve or more dark stripes that have a wide vertical shape.
Epipelagic species, both in oceanic and coastal waters. It feeds on small fish, especially anchovies, crustaceans and squid.
Its maximum length is 50 cm, most commonly ranging from 20 to 40 cm.
Its spawning season is from November to August.
It is captured with different gear: Dragnet, trammel and longline.
A blue fish, its red meat is firm, compact, tasty, very rich in protein and fats.
